How to stop my Roku device from overheating

My device has worked great for more than 6 months and now it states that it’s overheating. I switched the Roku stick device from the bedroom to the living room and it worked fine for a few weeks and the same thing happened. How can I fix this?

    I had my Streaming Stick + overheating only on 4K UHD videos.  Got the Free Cord Extender from Roku and that fixed my issue.

    Seems the heat from the TV was being transferred via the HDMI connection to the Stick.

    I added the extender and no heat, now, is being transferred.

      After reading the help pages I completed the form for the free lead, no reply.  Waited a week then did it again no reply, this continued for a month until I just stopped.  The form is misleading with false statements: Free HDMI Lead and delivery within 5 days

      How did you get the free HDMI lead?  I have contacted support so many times I can do it on autopilot without reply, do they really exist?

      For clarfication what does shortly mean in the next millennium or so? 

      Who did you contact? Was it a real human contact for these mysterious support people."where is the missing support team" What cryptic messages can we read from the default emails

      Thank you for that observation.  I have an HDMI extender on order from Roku and will be looking forward to similar results.

    It's fairly normal for your device to get warm during use, but if you are seeing a message on screen mentioning overheating, there are a few things you can do to help.

    If you have a Roku Streaming Stick that is overheating, I'd recommend ordering a free HDMI extender from our website, and troubleshooting your wireless network to see if you can resolve the connection issue.       My Roku keeps over heating after being turned on for only 45 minutes. Eventually the program goes off. I just purchased it 2 months ago and it's impossible to get anyone on the phone supposedly due to the pandamic, which I don't see why that has anything to do with no customer service by phone?

      My ultra is overheating. It's getting plenty of ventilation, it's not around other electronics.. recent software update is the culprit?

      There is absolutely no issue with my internet nor my modem, however, my roku overheats every couple hours. No other devices have any issue whatsoever. This is, without question, a roku issue. I'm switching to Fire stick.

        Gina,, please read my solution above.  Use a coaster or stone to disseminate the heat build up: I have now been using the roku steadily for weeks after the original complaint with no problems at all.  Best of luck it might work for you......so lo tech, I know.

    I have a Roku Premiere and have been getting a Device Overheating message for a few days. I have tried unplugging and letting it cool down many times, moving my Roku, placing it away from any other device, and plugging directly into wall outlet. None of these have helped. Is the device defective? Please let me know what steps I should take next.

    I use the stick and can not watch it for anything over 3 hours because of over heating, please help

      Make sure your stick is NOT plugged directly into the TV but use the short extender. Also, do not use the USB on the TV but use the wall adapter for power.  Good luck.

        After adding a 3" HDMI cable, my stick still overheated after a several hours of being plugged into the wall. I have plugged the usb power into my tv, so now when I shut of my tv, the usb power also stops, and the Roku Stick cools off. I must use the usb or my stick will overheat and funny things happen like the sound being out of sync with the picture. I must wait about 30 seconds every time I switch on the tv for the stick to boot up. This is disappointing, but I get the feeling that Roku doesn't care much about it.

        I have been dealing with mine overheating so I filled out the online form to request the free HDMI extender but it will not accept the SN that I am entering.  I am carefully entering it but no luck.  Any suggestions?

      It seems like this is a major problem with Roku. I have two different types and both ar doing it.  One does not plug into the hdmi and it’s overheating

        Do you also use the wall plug and NOT the USB power ? 

        I had to do BOTH, use wall plug and use the short jumper to HDMI.

    I have had my Roku stick (Model 3920) almost a year and now I am getting a display on my TV that the device is OVERHEATING,  It is in a COOL area and has not been moved since installing. I have unplugged the device several times to cool down because it is hot to the touch. I do NOT have a Red light displayed, just the normal flashing Green light. Is my device faulty???

      That's not considered a stick, its roku premiere. How are you powering it? Off a tv usb port or plugged into the wall outlet?

        I also have a Roku model 3920 that is overheating after just over a year of use. We have not moved the device, it is in a cool area and this has never been an issue before. It’s hot to the touch but no red light only flashing green. Can we get any advice on how to fix this?

    I was super happy with my Roku express for last six month or so, so I bought a brand new Roku stick+ yesterday from a local seller for my Samsung 4k tv. Within very short time of watching a show on amazon prime, Roku displayed the overheating message. I am shocked! The Roku express would run for hours without any problem. I am using the provided power supply and it's updated to the latest Firmwire.

    I have ordered the HDMI extension cable, not sure how that will help as the back of my TV seems completely cooled down. But will give it a shot. Any other suggestions? Or is it just a bad hardware, which looking at the thread may people seems be complaining about :(

        Roku is still overheating even with HDMI extension. Then I started to change different settings to see if it made any difference. What I found is interesting: When I use 4K 60 (that's what Roku detected with auto settings) the Roku overheats. If I change that to 1080p the it doesn't overheat anymore 😄 I have also test the 4K 30, it heats up the Roku much more but it doesn't get the overheating message while I tested for several hours.

        It's not ideal, but at least this setting works, thought this might help someone in this forum 🙂

    I have a roku premier. It is NOT in a cabinet. It is NOT close to any heat source and yet even after sitting it on a freezer block, 5 mins after plugging in says overheating. The only answer I see online is to stop using at this point. Well that does me no good when it is my main TV source. Any help is appreciated.

    Why hasn't Roku fixed that problem on their devices, I know they can't build a fan in their stick streaming devices but they could redesign them to keep it from doing that. Xbox fixed their overheating Xboxes, and no other devices I have (chromecast stick & fire tv stick) has that problem. Now that I know all this I might have to tell people to get something else.

    Same thing happening to me.... 6 months great, no issues, then all of sudden after awhile, it overheads daily!

      Five months fine, now the overheat message is appearing. Ambient near device is same as when installed - 19°C. Where is the support? Can I take it back to Best Buy for a replacement?

      I see tens of posts for this, and to PM Danny. How do we do that? I don't see that in the profile or anywhere else.
