How to keep the HBO Max app to keep track of episode viewing?

Does anyone have tips for how to get the HBO Max app to keep track of what I've been watching correctly?

About 50% of the time it will remember where I left off, but frequently it skips back at least 1-2 episodes and shows watched episodes as unwatched.

I've even tried pausing / stopping watching mid-episode, waiting a few minutes before quitting the HBO app, and a few other things -- whether my next session picks up at the correct place seems totally random.

I don't expect the HBO Max app to be as good as Netflix, but this seems like some pretty basic functionality that does not work reliably in the slightest.

Mainly using a Roku Ultra, but have a Roku Streambar as well.

  • The Roku version of the HBO Max app has had issues for a long time. If you watch something for awhile, then hit the up-arrow to pop up the timebar, you will see it actually jump to where you are in the program. It basically is not always keeping track of it's location in the background. What I have found that helps if you want to stop in the middle of something is to hit up-arrow first to update the time bar, then hit pause, then exit out.

      I will try this, thank you. Seems like the first reasonable response on this thread. I have tried watching all the way through to the end of the credits, that also seems to work usually but still sometimes it seems to forget the viewing of an entire episode. Seems like kind of a key piece of a streaming app to be so unreliable.

  • Yes it happens on both, and both have been restarted.

    It looks like you're having trouble keeping track of which episode you're watching on HBO Max.

    Does this issue occur on both your Roku Ultra and Roku Streambar? We recommend restarting your Roku device by navigating to Settings > System > Power.
