HDHomeRUN - No longer able to change channels or use any other app functions.

I am suddenly no longer able to change channels or use any other HDHOMERUN app functions on my Roku Premier+. I have restarted Roke box and have also uninstalled the HDHOMERUN app using the Roku and also using the account website. Still unable to change channels or use any other app function. All other apps on the Roku are working fine.

When app launches, it tunes to the lowest numbered channel on my HDHOMERUN channel list, but I aem unable to do anything within the app after that.

  • Only Silicon Dust can revert their app in the Roku Channel Store, Roku themselves cannot control that. It's completely under the control of the developer, in this case Silicon Dust.

As an FYI: the HDHR app on your Roku is written in a completely different programming language than what's used for virtually any other platform. So the fact it works on a different platform (I tested my Nvidia Shield and it worked fine, my Ultra 4800 won't even load the channel that was selected on start) is meaningless for the Roku devices. I will also repeat something I heard on the SD forums in the past: they aren't making much of an effort for their Roku app. I can't recall if they gave an explanation about that statement, but their Roku app was their lowest priority.

I should add... my HDHOMERUN device is working fine on other platforms (i.e., Windows PC).

  • mine too! and tried everything you tried with no luck 😞

Same problem.  The HDHomeRun app is all but useless on our TCL Roku TV.  Can no longer change channels.  The channel sidebar on the right seems to no longer exist.  We’ve tried removing and reinstalling the app, no change in how the app behaves.

I rerouted my HDHomerun through my Samsung smart TV to continue watching hd antenna television, maybe it's a sign to take a break from streaming ,😜✌️

I just got a message from Silicon Dust support about this.  They said:

We submitted the fix late yesterday, so as soon as Roku approves that then it should go out for everyone.

I rerouted my HDHomerun through my Samsung smart TV to continue watching hd antenna television, I have Roku sound bars with Roku extension speakers on all 4 TV's and they can't be used till issue is resolved and I can reroute back through Roku players. 🫤

  • Yup.  Same problem for me.  I have 4 Roku devices on various makes of TV's.  Not one of them can change channels on HDHomeRun.  Removed the app and reinstalled it to no avail.  HDHomeRun works fine on my laptop and iPhone.

  • Just got a reply from SiliconDust support:

There was a bug in the last update for the HDHomeRun app that went out over the weekend. We have submitted a new version of the HDHomeRun app to Roku that should be coming out as soon as Roku approves it.

  • Lots of reports all over the internet about this bug.  Seems everyone is talking about it EXCEPT the app support staff.. they seem to be MIA.  Just roll back to the prior version please!

Thanks GordonL! I'm not sure how I can roll back to a previous app version. Any Tips?

I ,am pretty sure u cant.. the app developers have to do it.

  • Same problem. Checked Roku and HDHomerun versions. Both current.

Removed HDHomerun app from Roku, readded. Same issue.

Rebooted HDHomerun and Antennae booster. Same issue.

Loaded on my new Windows 11 laptop. Works fine.

    Samsung Android phone. Works fine.

I would think there are a lot of Roku users out there.

  • HDHomeRun was contacted by me and said they are working on HdHomeRun App bug. The last update had a problem. The same as you described and the same as I have. They are working as fast as they can to fix and send update. I gues we sit tight. I put HdHomeRun App on firestick and it works fine!!!!

The Fire Stick has a completely different operating system from a Roku, and the programming language used by the apps is also different. You can't compare apps across different platforms for operational differences. A bug on one platform is not necessarily going to appear on another. And yes, the HDHR app on my Nvidia Shield (Android based OS) works where my Rokus (Linux based but highly modified) do not.

When I try to force a refresh it indicates that the app (version .89 build 20240402) is already up to date.

If you search for the app in the Roku store it lists Version 2.3, Apr 4, 2024 as available.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling but I keep getting .89…

  • Hmm, I'm not experiencing the problem with the new Roku TV Pro series, it's running Roku OS 13.0.

If it matters the SiliconDust HDHomeRun hardware is FLEX 4K with a 2TB SERVIO.

Haven't tried the TCL Roku sets, they're running Roku OS 12.5.5 on last check.

I just checked my Ultra again. It too is on 13.0. I also used a different device to set the HDHR to a known working channel. Had the same problem as before, it acts like it's loading but basically freezes up. Hitting the Home button is the only thing that works, which of course takes you completely out of the app. Silicon Dust hasn't issued an update yet to fix the problem.

I performed an update on my Roku Premier+ yesterday and the HDHomeRun app received an update. I am now able to change channels... but the volume control does not work.

  • I'm in the same boat with both streaming stick and hardwired premium. Frozen on one channel with no options or actions thereafter using any buttons on the remote.

Hope for solution soon. I use the newest 4-tuner HDHomeRun and love it.

I was experiencing the same or similar problem as others here.  Starting a week or two ago, app would only play one channel.  Tried today, and app would not find device.

However, the device is showing up/running on my network (using my router web UI),  So I used the HDHomerun web UI and found a message that a firmware update was available.  I was running firmware from 2022, the latest is from 12/23.

Updated firmware, which also resets the device.  Now app works fine.

Yeah, I had already checked that. My HDHR Flex 4K is already running firmware from 12/23. Good suggestion though.

You're not telling us anything that can help. What model Roku device? What exactly do you mean you can't "see" the apps? Are they simply not playing content, you can't open the app, or the app is literally missing from your home screen? Is your network connection good?

SD has released a new update of the HDHR app on Roku yesterday (May 28). However, I'm still not getting any audio from my Premiere 3920. My Ultra 4800 was working with the previous update. The app loads and I can select the various channels the receiver is picking up. But no audio through the Premiere. Since the broadcast audio is AC3/Dolby Digital, there's no issue with the TV supporting the audio codec.
