Forced ads on hulu live replay

When playing recorded content on hulu live using roku express, I am often unable to fast forward thru commercials. This does not occur when I play the same hulu show on my Android TV without the roku. Reddit users have reported the same behavior as a known roku hulu app issue. Any chance this can be fixed?

  • Welcome, and thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, TylerA.

We appreciate you for raising your concern with us. No worries. We're here to assist you with this.

Kindly try to highlight the app and then press the star* button on your remote to update it. The app should be in Version 636, build 0.

If the issue still persists, kindly try to remove the app, perform a system reboot, and then re-install it to see if the issue will still occur.

Let us know how it goes, and we'll go from there. We'll be anticipating your response!

  • Hi, Community users!

We appreciate you for trying to troubleshoot the app by following the steps provided above to no avail.

In these circumstances, we highly recommend contacting the Customer Support of the Hulu app for further clarification and assistance, as they are the ones who created, maintained, and updated their app independently on the Roku streaming platform.

We hope to get everything sorted out soon and appreciate you bearing with us in the meantime.

    Best regards,
    Carly

  • Hi Jeeshman,

A warm welcome to the Roku Community!

We're sorry to hear about the experience on the Hulu channel. Please be advised that Roku only transmits the channel and is not responsible for the ads and contents within an app. The contents and ads are solely chosen by the respective channel, and we have no control over the programming or operation of the channel.

With that being said, we would recommend reaching out to Hulu Support to report the issue and for further help.

    We appreciate your understanding.

    All the best,

I am having the same issue with Hulu Live on my Roku devices (2023 Roku Ultra, 2023 TCL/Roku TV), and the problem does not occur on my Android device (GoogleTV/Chromecast). It appears that the Hulu app/channel on Roku has this glitch.

I regret posting in this topic, because I now believe that this issue can only be resolved by the Hulu programmers. If Carly (Moderator) is able to refer this issue to the Hulu programmers, that might be most helpful. Thank you, in advance.

This is still happening. We experience it only when watching hulu live on a roku. It never happens when we watch hulu live on our Android TV without the roku. Our roku's are at the latest level of the roku software. This is not a hulu problem. It's a roku problem.

  • This is still happening as of 4/10/2024. When I try to fast forward through commercials on a DVR'd Hulu show on my Roku Ultra, I get the message "Your video will continue at this point after the break" and it won't fast forward. When I switch to the Hulu app on my Samsung Smart TV, the problem goes away and I can fast forward through commercials on the same show perfectly fine.

Just read the conversation on this topic.  It appears that Roku is punting to Hulu on this.  I have used Roku's for years.  Could it be that Roku has worked out a deal with Hulu to make you watch commercials and they get a piece of the action?  I dropped satellite TV three months ago and switched to Hulu live TV no adds.  I am watching more ads now than I ever have because of not being able to fast forward through the commercials.  I'm paying extra to Hulu for no ads but so far the only programs I've been able to watch with no ads are on Hulu, Disney, ABC and sometimes Fox.  This leaves a huge amount of shows that have ads. (False advertising by Hulu). To add insult to injury (to my pocketbook) I can't fast forward though the commercials on the shows that have commercials.  I've spent a couple of hours on the phone with Hulu customer service that was a total waste of time.  So after reading the above, it appears I need to stop buying Roku's and switch to You Tube TV.  Thank you to those above who have taken the time to try and fix this issue.

Thanks for your response. We signed up for hulu live July 1st when YTTV dropped SNY. We record every Mets game and usually start watching about a half hour after the game starts. From the beginning we noticed that we would be unable to FF thru some ad breaks between innings or in the middle of the inning. We would get “playback will resume at this point after the ads” or “seeking not allowed during this ad”. It happens often enough that we would never be able to catch up to live during a 2.5+ hour game. This happens with other shows we record.

I read on the hulu live sub-reddit that this is device-specific behavior, so I decided to do a test. One of our TVs is a Sony Android set on which we have a roku for consistency of UI with our other TVs that have roku expresses. Last week, we started watching a game on the Sony via the roku. At the break in the middle of the 1st inning, we were unable to FF thru the ads. I pressed home to exit the hulu app and switched to hulu via the Android TV UI. I FFed to just before the end of the top half of the 1st inning and hit play. When the ads started, I hit FF and I was not prevented from skipping over the ads. I was able to FF over every ad until I caught up to live in the 7th inning. The first time I’d caught up in almost a month!

We repeated the test every day for the next week with identical results. Pretty conclusive. BTW Before we switched to hulu live, we recorded and watched games using YTTV on our roku expresses. We never had this issue.

      Thanks for your assistance.

        Hi JoelB1,

        Thanks for your reply!

We'd like to take a closer look at this case. Have you tried using an alternative network to see if there are any differences after doing that?

We also suggest performing the troubleshooting steps below and seeing if that helps.

        • Remove the channel: Highlight the channel tile on your home screen and press the Star button to open the options menu. Select Remove channel and confirm.
        • Restart your Roku device: Restart the device from the settings menu. Go to Settings > System > System Restart > Restart.
        • Re-install the channel: After your Roku device restarts, visit the Roku Channel Store and add the channel again.

Keep us posted if this works for you!

        Thanks,

        Rey
