commercials on acorn.tv

I have a paid subscription to acorn.tv on the roku channel.  "Midsomer Murders" is part of acorn.tv subscription, yet all episodes (except season 20) still have commercials.  I thought paid subscriptions weren't supposed to have commercials?

  • I have contacted Acorn TV (paid subscription) and they assured me that there are no commercials on Acorn programs. Mine are on a streaming video "Single Handed." They offered that because I access my channels via an Amazon Firestick that Amazon might be responsible. I cannot talk with anyone at Amazon supposedly because of the Coronavirus. I placed a question on one of the Amazon forums and haven't gotten any really helpful feedback. I would suggest that anyone who runs into this problem contact Acorn and Amazon or whatever provider might be responsible until we get an answer.

Mine is on Single Handed as well. I have been watching it for about a month, all of a sudden there are commercials. I pay for Acorn through Roku and had one other issue of commercials on a movie. Any suggestions ?

That is totally controlled by the channel provider (Acorn in this case). You'd have to contact them to get an answer to your question.

I agree that most subscription services remove ads, but some might only kick into lower quantities of ads. I think Hulu might be that way. The lowest cost subscription still has ads, but more expensive plans remove them.

It seems that the content is not totally controlled by the channel provider.

I contacted acorn.tv who said that if the subscription were directly through them (instead of through the roku channel) there would definitely be no commercials.  They told me to contact roku support.

I tried to contact roku support but it has been over a week and all I get is automatic responses.

It seems that if you have a subscription channel that has program overlap with roku channel free programming (with commercials) the roku channel gives priority to the version with commercials.  An undisclosed penalty of subscriptions via the roku channel.

I know your post was a while ago but for your information and anyone that accesses your post.  You can still have your subscription paid for thru your ROKU account but list the channel separately on your home page.  You may not wish to access each channel individually, but I have ACORN and I do not get any commercials for Midsommer or any show.  It's the same for my CBS, prime, BritBox, Disney+ … I have to back out of the current channel and access the new one from the main page on the ROKU TV but I am commercial free.

  • Midsomer Murders (Seasons 1 - 20) is also available as part of  the free ROKU CHANNEL offerings, which are ad-supported.

You may be accessing Season 20 directly from the free ROKU CHANNEL offering rather than through your ACORN TV subscription. I am not sure how ROKU manages content that is available as free ad-supported content but also available commercial free via a channel subscription. I would double check your selection and make sure you are inside your ACORN TV subscription channel when you select Season 20 for viewing.

I access acorn.tv through the "roku channel" because that is where the subscription is (not directly with acorn.tv)  And yes, it seems that seasons 1-19 are coming from "Filmrise" source (with ads) while season 20 is coming from acorn.tv (no ads).  I wonder why the roku application won't detect when a paid source and the free source overlap and preferentially use the paid source with no ads?  Instead I cannot get paid source programs without ads !

Hard to say if it's on Roku's side or if Acorn isn't feeding it correctly. something tells me that if they are getting one season right, Roku might be doing everything right on their end. But they really need to research it, because it isn't working as you would expect.

After watching Acorn TV, bought through Roku, commercial-free and paying Roku $5 a month, suddenly (today) we get commercials.  We restarted the Roku several times.  I guess the right thing to do is drop our subscription from Roku, and contact Acorn TV directly.

      Thanks for the inquiry.

What content are you trying to watch on Acorn TV through the Roku Channel? Please be aware that Acorn TV will not be able to assist with content through the Roku Channel, but rather only content  through the channel provider directly.

With more information we will be able to assist you further with the issue you are experiencing.

      Thanks,
      Danny

        Danny,

It was the Yorkshire Vet.  It was true for a couple of days, then it went away.  Going in and out of the channel and rebooting the Roku didn't seem to fix it.  The next day, we just didn't have the problem.  I would guess it is a problem with your software.

I currently have Acorn TV that I have subscribed to through Roku.   We were watching Doc Martin WITHOUT commercials up to yesterday, when all of a sudden there are a TON of commercials!   Four commercials every 8 minutes or so.   My understanding is that they are supposed to be commercial free - I can subscribe to Acorn directly and get commercial free access, so I don't understand why I have commercials when going through ROKU.

        Thanks for the post.

Can you provide more information regarding the issue you are experiencing? Are you watching Acorn TV through the Roku Channel or are you watching it through the channel directly? Are you doing anything different now that you are seeing commercials than when you were when you weren't seeing any commercials?

With more information we will be able to assist you further.

        Thanks,
        Danny

9/27/2020  I started a subscription to Acorn TV in August.  Everything was running superbly until two nights ago.  Since then, for every episode of "Doc Martin" there has been four segments of four ads.  I am NOT interested in seeing 16 ads. for anything.  Isn't a paid subscription supposed to be ad free?   I noticed the same canned response from Roku to other service issues.  Anyone else having issues, and what is there to do about it?   FRUSTRATING!!

Did you contact Acorn TV? Not all subscriptions are ad-free. Many services have multiple tiers, some with ads, more expensive ones without (CBS All-Access and Peacock are two I know of.)

  • Season20 now has ads, never had this before. Even yesterday there were no ads ???

You only see ads if you subscribe to Acorn through the Roku Channel. I canceled and subscribed direct with Acorn. No more ads!
