Channels changing on their own

I'm so glad this is being raised and to hear I'm not alone with this problem.  I too have experienced this and there is no stuck button involved.  In fact, my remote was sitting on the table and all of a sudden my TV screen switched from one channel to the NFL football game!!  I have Roku Ultra and have ethernet cable.  I do not use wifi. This seems to be increasing in frequency and it's very disconcerting not to mention annoyinng.  I love my Roku but I don't appreciate my channels being changed without me doing so.

  • Hi, ElisComing Greetings here in the Roku Community!

Thanks for reaching out about this. We'd like to help you out with the Channels changing issue. We can start with the basic troubleshooting steps below.

    • Roku restart: Navigate to Settings > System > System Restart to reboot your Roku device.
    • Remote batteries: If you are using a Roku remote with batteries, consider replacing them with fresh ones, as weak batteries can cause erratic behavior.
    • Interference: Check for any infrared devices or sources of interference near the TV that might be affecting the remote signal.
    • Try a different remote: If you have another Roku remote, test it to see if the issue persists.

In the meantime, we highly suggest using the Roku mobile app on your phone to control the TV. This will help us determine if the channel-changing issue continues.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

  • I’ve been having trouble like this. I even made a video of it a long time ago. My tv would randomly change channels, go louder, switch apps, etc.In the past I’ve managed to factory reset my TV and it stopped messing up for a little while. But it’s started again, even when I don’t have the TV hooked up to any internet.

Recently I have figured out that when my TV is bugging out, the red light in the remote sensor will blink rapidly, indicating that it’s getting a signal. So something must be causing the interference.

The craziest thing is that every Roku TV in my house has exhibited this behavior at times.
what are some common things that could cause this interference? I can’t figure out why this happens. It’s never happened to me before living where I do now

Next time you see this, try covering the IR sensor and see if that helps.  I've seen warnings in manuals about interference from fluorescent lights, sunlight through windows etc.  I've never experienced any myself, but it's worth knowing if whatever it is is light-based.

      Hey Islandswamp,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

It looks like you're having an issue with your Roku TV switching apps on its own. We'd like to investigate further.

      Could you provide this information?

      • When did this start happening?
      • How far is your Roku TV from the others?
      • Have you noticed any buttons stuck on your Roku remote?

Can't wait to hear from you soon.

      Thanks,
      Roku Community Team

I have 2 Roku tvs that I have turned off all power saving modes and they just started doing this today. They are randomly changing channels on live tv after 1 hour or just going to a purple screen. Both of them not just one.  I need a fix for this!
