THIS appears to be an attempted hack. I tried to send an email to support to report this issue; the short and sweet was that nothing short of factory reset would fix the issue.
There were no power issues, the system is powered from an UPS. It appears to be a stream injection. Every Roku on the network was affected. No other apps on Roku except Paramount Plus on Roku was affected. Android TV was not affected, Paramount Plus on Android TV was not affected. Paramount Plus on the computer was not affected. None of my other computers, systems, or networks were affected.
Hello, I have solved a problem that I had on Paramount Plus only by doing a factory reset. Not ideal, but I expect it could occur again.. According to Paramount Plus this issue has happened with other customers, as well as myself. Of course, it took a while to recognize that this was a Roku issue and a Paramount App in Roku issue.
Just before the error appeared, I noticed that the Brand and Ad section before a show starts streaming was severely affected. Lately there have been 60%+ complete failure followed by Error during this stage of streaming. On one occasion after the Error appeared, the Roku completely froze requiring a complete power off reset of the system. After powering up, the error appeared.
Multiple shows were affected in Paramount Plus. The first show I tried to watch was permanently affected until factory reset. Star Trek - The Next Generation. (STTNG) Both audio and (CC) closed captioning was affected. Independent of the Roku setting, which was correct, STTNG was in German (audio and (CC)). Other show's primary language was not affected in Paramount Plus. Many other shows had (CC) affected, and the language that appeared seemed to be related to what other languages were available other than the language chosen. Shows in the primary language only may have not been affected at all, because of how Paramount lets Roku handle these choices, it was not possible to determin which if any languages were available in most of the shows. No other app in Roku appeared to be infected.I wrote this because I needed a way to contact Roku and inform them of the issue. It was impossible for me to determine the exact source of the exploit, and my home system and network did not appear to be affected. I suspect the start up stream in Paramount Plus or the Ad start stream service to be the part of the program affected.
Simply, for myself, this is a one off at this time; I would like to report it as such. Only Paramount was affected, none other... they are obviously not going to do anything about it, since they are acting like it is a Roku problem. And, it is, but it only affected Paramount on Roku. This is a critical point. However, it is my personal opinion that it appears that the issue is with Paramount Plus' interface with Roku that has been affected, and therefore both Roku and Paramount Plus will need to fix it.
I have recommended to Paramount Plus that they do what most other apps do which is to create separate primary audio language and (CC) language options within the app itself. I do not use every app or ROKU and do not know if other apps that rely on ROKU for this choice have been affected. Paramount Plus is the only app I use that relies on Roku for this interface, and it was the only app I use that was affected.
Since it is one time, I am simply reporting the issue to ROKE... however, I would like a response from ROKU as the fastest and easiest way to report issues like this. I am a retired scientist, tech, troubleshooter, computer analyst and troubleshooter, and spent much of my life troubleshooting many systems and situations.. IOW I am a Metrologist with an extensive computer background.
The issue interfered specifically with one program "Star Trek - The next generation" (STTNG) other programs I checked were unaffected with primary language (audio).
STTNG (CC) closed captioning was affected, it was always in GermanMany other shows in Paramount were unaffected in Primary (audio) nor (CC). I suspect because they were only available in English, and only provided English closed captioning (CC).
Although primary audio did not appear affected for various other shows in Paramount, all my shows were in English and I do not know what other languages were available for primary language support. I only observed that (CC) was affected in other shows. I think this depended upon which languages were available in CC. Also, I suspect if other languages were available, one of those languages were substituted for English or anything other than the (CC) language chosen.IOW, the language chosen for (CC) was affected, the choice affected may have been chosen based on location in individual show being viewed language availability list, however, whatever was displayed it was never the language chosen, but some other, which varied depending upon a factor unknown by me.
Removing and Restoring Paramount Plus did not work. Only Paramount Plus on Roku was affected. Paramount Plus on Android was not affected. Paramount Plus on Browser was unaffected. All Roku devices in my home *were* affected similarly.
Factory reset fixed the issue, whether temporary or permanently is yet to be determined.
I suspect a security problem; however, the type of Roku devices was not a factor, both of mine are different Roku devices.
I have confirmed this issue on the 2nd Roku device in our household; however, it has not been yet factory reset. If I hear back, I will let you know whether I had to force factory reset to resolve the issue, and whether that resolved the issue. I see not reason it won't work at this time.- Huskymomof2Newbie
I am having issues while watching Star Trek on Paramount Plus. My closed caption is set to English as default, but started showing up in German. When the episode begins I can go in settings and change it from German back to English, but I have to repeat this for each new episode and it is showing as set to English. Is this a Paramount Plus issue or a Roku issue? I have also reset my Roku. Still having the problem. I hope this issue has a resolution?

I am having the same issue but it is my default language is set to Deutsch every time I start a new episode or resume the last one I was playing. I have the roku stick but that probably doesn’t matter. This is very annoying, none of my other TV apps are having this issue either. This started around 5-ish days ago as far as I can remember, sometime last week. This is on TNG also, if that matters or helps.
thanks,

I have the Roku Ultra LT device, and have recently discovered a very odd problem with my captions and the Paramount+ app.
Regardless of the movie, tv show, season, episode, previously watched, never watched, or resume watching choice that I make, the captions default to whatever "Captions Track" is first in the list for that particular show. Irrespective of my Roku's default settings. (English preferred)
Example: Any episode of Blue Bloods, begins with the caption track defaulting to deutch. Frasier defaults to dansk. Even if I correct the settings from within the app, during the show (Using my voice remotes asterisk button, and manually changing the track to English) if I stop the episode and immediately resume, the track changes back to the default first on the track list. The transition from episode to episode also resets the captions back to the initial track.
If I run the Paramount+ app from any other device, including directly through the smart TV itself, I cannot replicate the problem. The caption settings behave as expected.
There are no direct Paramount+ caption controls from inside the app, through the Roku so it seems to be a conflict just in the compatibility of the two.
It has worked properly, even using the Paramount+ app, for many months. This is a relatively new problem.
Please advise.

For the last few days every time I go to watch an episode of Star Trek on Paramount ,I have to keep changing it back to English otherwise I have to listen to it in Dutch. Is anyone else having this issue? And why do I have to keep re-adjusting my audio language, when I'm not making any changes and it's only on that one show?

I see a few more people are joining in as more and more systems are being affected. We all seem to concur, Paramount only, one show only, however I can't attest without know what other languages are availabe for other shows whether it's affecting them or not.. I can say, they don't always show in the language chosen for the (CC) closed captioning... but other than that, for me it's Star Trek the Next Generation.
I've also informed Paramount, and so hopefully, both Roku and Paramount will get together, and find what's happening...
It being Thanksgiving, I'm busy the next few days, and the weekend with family. But, will get that model number of my failing Roku. I'll say that whatever exploit is being used, it's a weird one... On my one machine after Factory reset, it looked like it worked, and when I moved it to another room, it immediately failed. Odd, but I think unrelated, just hat to catch it at the right (wrong?) time.
I still suspect it's related to the Ads that appear just before the show... is anyone else having problems with the ads failing and getting errors, or just not appearing at all? Just curious if that's consistant.
I almost never get the ads, and when I do, it's often after they've failed, then the show starts to stream and generates an error like 6040 or I think 6290 before it will play. Those are occurring on other shows... but they aren't being affected with the main audio language like STTNG is. It's frustrating. 🙂
Good luck tier 2. 🙂

I have the same issue on Paramount +
Channel version 7.7I could not get the tracker is # from the directions given. My settings are for English and they are in German on Hawaii Five-O and Bull. All seasons, all episodes.

Please advise if Roku can fix this without me having to do a factory reset.

I don't think Roku can guarantee that the Factory Reset will fix this at this time. I have a lot of other apps on Roku and hate doing this; but, it "might" fix it and I would try it; I have one newer model that it helped with Audio, but still having (CC) problems. (I've turned it off) If you've not done a factory reset, the biggest step to remember is to pair your remote when it first comes on after Factory Reset. (Remove battery cover, and press red button for 5 seconds to pair, when it asks you to do this. )
Since I do not not think this problem starts inside your Roku, I believe that it happens during the stream (I could be wrong) Factory reset clears your system, and IF the cause has been fixed, or partially fixed, a Factory rest may be the only way to find out if it's still happening. If you don't, then this will most likely not go away. I would do the Factory reset, and only load as few of your apps at first, till you see if it's worth while having them all.. if you have OK internet, most of these will be able to be load quickly, and account restored quickly by syncing using your phone via internet. (The Roku provides a scan code to get to the right site, and if your phone keeps the passwords (Google) then you will recover quickly. Otherwise they will need to be restored manually by providing password. I Factory reset only once, and have been giving them some time to find and fix the issue; from responses here, it appears they are working on the issue.) It will require both Roku and Paramount plus to work together so we need to be patient. (No, I do not work for either of these companies, I'm a customer like you... just a savvy computer guy! 😉
Good luck! I will do a Factory reset again after Thanksgiving, or on Monday to see if the problem is fixed yet. I'm sure it will take a little time especially if they have to push out an update to remedy the issue.
Welcome to the bug club, more new people every day! 😞

Mine does it on Frasier on paramount plus on roku tv.

This is also happening to me!
It’s happening when I watch Star Trek Voyager on Paramount plus. - MsRubyTuesdayBinge Watcher
Ok.. so as of Thanksgiving day I have just done the factory reset. So far so good about the CC on SEAL Team starts in English like it's suppose to. As someone mentioned it only lasted 2 days for them. I'll keep you guys posted!

I am seeing this same thing. Paramount Plus on Roku is so poorly written. The developers should be ashamed!
I keep getting stuck on German. I am not going to do a Factory Reset- I would rather cancel Paramount because frankly the content is not that great.
Roku and Paramount will just blame each other. This is the MOST disappointment I have had with Roku. Been a customer for many years since the second model.
- MsRubyTuesdayBinge Watcher
It may not be Paramount after all. Did factory reset this morning.. and my SEAL Team show it was happening on is on English like it's suppose to be.. Yay! Haha.. plus it fixed all my other issues that Roku never resolved. Such as the Screensaver freezing shows/apps. But know what you mean.. back then Roku blamed HBO app and HBO blamed Roku.
- ZenMasterChipStreaming Star
My 2nd machine started showing the correct primary audio language this evening w/o needing another Factory reset. Will check (CC) after the Holidays on Monday. Perhaps that will go away as a problem soon too. So glad that worked for you... they have suprisingly streamlined this process... it wasn't nearly the headache I expected... Sure, a little work, naturally for security not everything is fast... but most of it was... I was happy at how many of my apps were easy to restore once the reset was complete.
Oops, looks like I had already replied... via site... didn't realize the email was for this... sorry for the duplicate!
Hope you had a great day of giving thanks! 🙂

We're seeing this with The Good Fight and Madam Secretary switching to Danish (dansk).
- Model: 4800X - Roku Ultra
- SN: <redacted>
- Software Version: 11.5.0 build 4235-C2
- Device ID: <redacted>
At a guess, the Paramount+ channel is ignoring the default caption language and using the first language on the list (alphabetically). It happens every time we enter the app, even to go out and look at the System page to get the information noted above.
- MsRubyTuesdayBinge Watcher
Someone suggested to factory reset the roku. It's worked so far for them, me and others. Even fixed the darn Screensaver issue i was having. It was pretty easy. I just sign back into apps as I go to use them.
- oreokayNewbie
Same here. For each episode of Blue Bloods, Roku has started switching closed captions to Dutch. It also completely drops the sound frequently when coming back to the channel, i have to hit the home button & go back to paramount plus to see if the sound is back (can hear the sounds outside of the channel) & if not i have to restart. Lastly, just a few minutes ago pp totally shut itself down for no reason. That's new 😡
- MyomyersReel Rookie
Blue Bloods is German captions- starts automatically.
THIS IS THE WORST APP EVER!! I’ve emailed them several times about various problems things either never change or change slowly- MsRubyTuesdayBinge Watcher
I did a factory reset on the roku and have not had the issue with Paramount CC nor all the other issues I was having with roku. Such as the Screensaver and shows not continuing to next episode.. both those are fixed now.

I can't believe I'm still getting reminders from people having problems with this... So far it seems everyone who does a factory reset gets the problem fixed. I just want to make a plug. Yes, until we develop a hack free operating system and code we will still get (so far) minor hacks from time to time. So, the benefit of having a factory reset which downloads the latest versions, starts the system from scratch will still be the best option to try first. Thank goodness we don't have to do this to our computer operating systems (knock on wood). It is a small thing to do a factory reset on Roku... the system is DESIGNED to make getting you back in with all your apps restored an easy process... logging in and authenticating the apps is easy. You just use your phone, scan the code, and viola! You're in. It took me less than 5 minutes and although it did not get rid of the problem on the first day the problem was reported, I didn't have to do a factory reset again, the problem was fixed a couple of days later.
Now, the problem seems to be fixed "as long as you do a factory reset". I just wish people would actually read the posts others have made and the solution offered by MANY of us before deciding to post and gripe about Roku. Seriously, a little kindness goes a long way.... who would you want to help? Someone who appreciates your help; or someone who gripes without even trying but just runs on about how horrible you are?
Do the factory reset... you probably have more than one issue with the system... and let me just end with this. All computer electronics are susceptible to stray cosmic particles, and good ole SOL has been particularly active lately with the solar winds... and yes, this CAN corrupt your system. Learn to fix it... with computers this can be hard... But, with Roku, a factory reset is sometimes a necessity! Just do it! You'll be happier, and have a better experience... Not all problems are your or their fault... Yeah, Stray cosmic particles.... the particularly energetic ones... can strike any memory location... the ONLY fix will be a factory reset.... Just do it!
Very sincerely yours,
A happy but concerned customer who likes to help people HELP themselves!

PS Steps to do a FACTORY RESET
1 In the menu go to System/Advanced System Settings/Factory Reset <click>2 After your Roku resets... remove the battery cover, and pair the remote with your Roku
3. Follow the prompts to get back the apps that were not automatically installed (most will be)... and then
4. Click on the aps you use to authenticate and log into the app.
6. Repeat #4# for each app you want to use... (not all will need this.
7. Sit back, relax and enjoy a show!
