Can't skip Youtube ads or select the skip button

Lately I have not been able to skip Youtube ads. The ad will play with the countdown to let me skip, the skip button will appear, but every time i click the "OK" button on my remote it will pause the ad instead. It won't let me select the skip button, I'll try all the arrow buttons to make sure I've not just selected a different button instead, but all I'm able to do it make the progress bar appear and disappear.
