BBC iPlayer app is not working on Roku Express 4

Hi,

Is there a problem with the BBC iPlayer app?

For the past few days this app has not been working, it shows the BBC iPlayer logo and just hangs. All other apps work fine including BBC Sounds. I know that iPlayer is working from the BBC end because I can access it via my SKYQ box

  • Hi, shaunbuk

Greetings, and welcome to the Roku Community.

We understand your concern regarding the issue with BBC app that stopped working. We would advise you to perform a troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Follow the instructions below.

    1. Navigate to the channel tile on the Roku home screen, press the star (*) key on your remote, and choose "Remove channel".
    2. Next, restart your device from Settings > System > Power > System Restart (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step).
    3. Once your player/TV starts up again, go to "Streaming Store" on the Home screen, and add the channel back once more.

  • I come (all be it late) with a whole 2 solutions not just one

I've been having the same issues as others here
Iplayer goes to the splash screen
Then goes blank for a short period
Then shows the splash screen again.
It then either hangs entirely stuck on the splash screen or stays with the splash screen but loads a browser style sidebar.

    I've found 2 solutions

    1. The BBC recommended one on their website for an entirely different Roku issue
      https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/smart-tv-and-games-console-issues/roku-nowtv-aspect-ratio

Change the Roku to 720p........ I don't know why it works. I don't know how it works but I think the BBC Iplayer has different landing pages for different resolutions and the 1080p landing page is somewhat buggy or broken. This would also explain potentially why 1 Roku on 1 TV would work but another on another TV won't, because if the TV is 720p then the Roku will have defaulted to that
    2. weird work around - Open the Roku app on your mobile phone and load the Iplayer app from there (from a fresh restart). That has opened most times for me or select an Iplayer / BBC show from the recommendations list and it will load Iplayer, start playing the show then press back and you're at the Iplayer Menu.

I'm putting this in the BBC have screwed something up box but I doubt they'll actually admit it, the problem will just be quietly fixed in an update in March or something lol

  • I have a Roku 3.  A couple of days ago BBC I player stopped opening.  When I select it, nothing happens.  All the other channels are fine.  BBC support suggesting that I uninstall iPlayer and then reinstall it.  But they said that not all devices permit this.  Is this OK on Roku, and has anyone tried it with iPlayer?

        Hi RokuCarly

Thank you for your reply and suggestion.

I've tried the actions you've suggested but unfortunately the situation remains the same. After selecting the app the BBC iPlayer logo is displayed and the stays there, normally after a few seconds "Select who's watching ..." should appear. I've left the app at the BBC iPlayer logo for up to 5 minutes but nothing happens.

All the other apps I use are behaving normally including BBC SOUNDS and iPlayer works ok from my SKYQ set.

        Thanks
