App keeps disappearing and not visible in main menu

So the PBS app is working but cannot be displayed on the main Roku menu.  I have to search for it, when found it is listed as downloaded but can only be found (and used) via the search function.  Thoughts?

  • I found a resolution that worked for me with my Roku Ultra and hopefully it will help you too!

I too installed an app that didn't show up on the home screen menu, so I chatted with Roku tech for help and spent a couple hours of frustration with four different people that had no clue how to help me. They would tell me to remove it and reinstall it, however that isn't possible to do on the device when you can't see the icon on the menu. I could search for the app to find it and use it, but there was no option to uninstall. I also went to the Roku website to see if that offered an option to uninstall and then reinstall, no luck.

The only thing I could think of was to try a factory reset and hope that it would resolve the problem, but I wasn't looking forward to reinstalling all of the apps again and then having to log in to every app.

So, dragging my feet a little gave me the opportunity to have an epiphany. I remembered that there is an official Roku app that I installed on me iPhone some time ago that I never really used. That was the secret! That app allowed me to select the Roku device I was having the problem with and then view the apps installed. I found the app that didn't show on my Roku device and it allowed me to uninstall it, after which I reinstalled it. Walla! That solved the problem for me. I hope this helps you too!

      "Walla!" ... actually "VOILA"

      voi·là vwä-ˈlä
      variants or voila
used to call attention, to express satisfaction or approval, or to suggest an appearance as if by magic

Vwa-Lah, Wa-Lah, Wa-La: The Many Misspellings of Voilà

Voilà is a French borrowing into English that has mostly retained its Francophonic pronunciation: \vwä-ˈlä\, or \vwah-LAH\. It is clear that the \v\ in the pronunciation of voilà is sometimes not heard, and this, combined with the mismatch between voilà’s spelling and pronunciation, has led to a number of misspellings of the word based on its pronunciation. We have seen evidence for vwa-lah, vwah-la, wa-lah, wa-la, wah-lah, wallah, and even viola (for those who remember the letters in the word, if not the particular order of them). While these misspellings are more common in informal writing, we have started seeing them in newspapers and other edited sources as well. The correct spelling is voilà: if you have a hard time remembering how to spell it, you can use the mnemonic that voilà very often is misspelled.

This issue has been reported multiple times for multiple apps.  I don't know what the issue is, but it seems that it will eventually show up.  You can try checking for a "Software update" and/or a "System restart" from Settings->System, but it will probably just resolve itself eventually.

The original advice turned out to be true.  But to be honest, I don't know if someone fixed something or if it was just me jumping around in the menus and\or re-starting fixed it. Or both!   I'm just glad it's fixed now.  I now have the PBS channels on the Home Screen of both ROKUs!

The PBS channel is installed on 2 ROKUs. However, it only appears on 1 ROKU home screen.

It actually is installed on the ROKU where it's not on the Home Screen.  However, it's inconvenient to have to Search for the channel in order to play it.

I would like for it to be on both ROKU Home Screens.  Shouldn't that be possible?

I have the same issue. It began earlier in the week when PBS became unavailable and when that was resolved, I regained the PBS icon on the home menu on one Roku but not the other (despite the app being installed). Both had worked flawlessly for the prior 10 months. Bizarre.

Thanks.  I'm wondering if we should be talking to someone from PBS Tech to get this fixed.

  • I am having a very similar issue on two existing Rokus.

I just added a RokuTV. All my existing apps came over and show on the home screen. In the process of setting the new Roku TV up, I added two new apps.

On my existing two Rokus (one is a 4k stick, the other an Ultra), I do not see the new apps. They show installed and I can get them with search, but nothing on the home screen. I can not remove and re-add them.

This is obviously some sort of bug that Roku is failing to address. I assume a reset will add the new apps, but doing a factory reset on each device is not an acceptable solution.

Please pass this thread to the developers. This bug needs to be addressed.

      Same issue.
I used to have the app on the Home Screen but had to uninstall and reinstall and now it won’t show even though I keep adding it.
I can only find it in the search.

Same here. The YouTube TV app only shows in channel search. The app is installed, and there is no way to uninstall it - the web Roku channel store just lets me see details as it’s actually installed.

On the Roku itself, I can only launch the app by searching for “YouTube TV”, which gives me an option to open it, not to uninstall/install it.

I’ve tried multiple reboots. I’ve tried deleting other Home Screen apps I don’t use to see if that refreshes the Home Screen. Neither worked. Next I’ll probably try a factory reset, I just don’t want to sign in to every app I have if I can avoid that step.

  • Disney plus seems to be acting weird it has disappeared off my home screen can uninstall it only way to pull it up is to search anyone know how to fix this

I'm having the same issue. One day earlier this week it would not open at all and now it's complete off my home screen. It'll open when I search for it but there's no way for me to add it back to my home screen or anything else because nothing happens with I click the * button while in search. The only thing I can do it open the app.

I did system restart and the Disney plus app is still not on my homepage. I still have to search for it to open the app.

  • This is the same problem many of us have been experiencing, not necessarily that specific App.  It appears to be a Roku issue that they are not owning up to.  I have five (5) Roku devices, and a Roku 24" TV, and never had any problems until recently.  I have experienced this same issue with three (3) different Roku devices lately.
