Ads in "Top picks for you"

I am getting some very inappropriate ads on the "top picks for you".  I don't watch any form of **bleep**, or anything similar to these suggestions.  A little research indicates that I can turn on "personalized ads" to get rid of these. I don't think I should have to allow that to prevent being subjected to these ads.  It makes me want to get rid of my rokus.

Look under Settings/Home Screen. I don't see an entry for "top picks for you" on my Roku, but I also don't have that row at all. It may vary with the type of device. The closest I have is "What to Watch" and "Recommendation Rows", both of which I have off.

  • Actually I've enabled the sensitive ad content and turned off all categories and I'm still getting the perverse suggestions.  How do I get rid of them?  I really don't think "deep throat part 2" is an appropriate thing to be popping up.  No pun intended.

I'm having the same issue. I've got a list of **bleep** movies like I'm staying in some **bleep** motel. It's making me angry. I wonder if Roku cares that I will never buy a TV from them again. The fact that this has to be reported on a forum is ridiculous. And now that I've read about this, it appears to be a long-term problem.

  • We have been experiencing this exact same issue on our Roku streaming sticks. The "top picks for you" recommendations are littered with adult content, which means every time we go to the home screen we're treated to revealing or suggestive thumbnails.

Our Roku devices have never engaged with content like this, and in the 5+ years of using Roku we've never run into this issue before, but we started seeing these thumbnails almost exclusively within the last month. I understand why this content is available for users, but it is extremely annoying (to say the least) to fire up a Roku for casual entertainment and be met with thumbnails containing near nudity/suggestive poses.

I'm glad it isn't just me.  We have only really noticed it in the past week.  The funny thing this morning is that there were words in my previous that have been bleeped in these forums.

I'm including that as well as the ad preferences screens.

      I've turned on personal ads...

And disabled everything but political ads.

I understand that a "solution" has been shared in this thread, which is to simply disable the feature. I understand how to do that. The point I wanted to raise here is: Why is this happening at all? Is it not bizarre to have softcore adult entertainment being recommended by a major platform when your actual viewing habits do not include anything of that sort?

Another user in this thread pointed out to OP that the shows recommended to them are TV-14. That may be true for them, but it is definitely not the case for our devices. Here's some screenshots of the shows we were being recommended, all either TVMA or UR. I went through each one and hit * to select the option "I don't like this", which removed them from the home screen for the moment, but they still appear in the list if I select "show all".

I would love to see someone from Roku tell me it's intentional for this kind of content to be listed on the same screen as the latest Minions movie.

  • Innapropriate erotic show suggestions on my top picks randomly showed up. I've seen other people post with this problem recently and I'm posting to demand Roku to fix this. There are no previous searches on any device that would lead to suggest this. I've even checked my kids devices to be sure and this is highly inappropriate! If this isn't fixed within the week I'm replacing all of my tvs. I've turned on and off every setting imaginable and nothing fixes it. Things named Revenge P*rn and Deep Throat should never be suggestions on a TVs homepage, EVEN if you watch the stuff why would it show up on the homepage and why is there no setting to turn it off. Unbelievable. So disappointed.

I’m already wanting to sue! I have this filth the EXACT same movies another poster put pictures of up all over the home screen on my family Roku tv and we have ZERO watch history that would ever prompt anything like this on ANY device in the house I’ve scoured every single one of them and nearly kicked my bf out over it because it’s happening on our family tv and I have a 4 and 5 year old that watch this Roku tv daily. Unacceptable Roku

Same happened to all my Roku devices sometime in the past couple of days. Same movies as you indicated. Something must've got really messed up at Roku HQ and I suspect everyone is experiencing the same garbage.

  • Get these nasty movies from popping up in my top picks. I don't watch this filth, and neither will anyone in my household. I've changed all kinds of parental controls, but they're still there. This is disgusting!!!!!!!!

Same in my house and we already had parental controls set to TV 14 the first ones popped up about 5 days ago and have gotten worse. Someone else posted the pictures and every single movie is exactly identical to what’s plastered all over our Home Screen recommendations. I have very young children and this needs to be fixed.

  • I also came here to ask that they remove all of this **bleep**. I purchased this TV, on Friday, for my 4 year granddaughter. I will be returning it tomorrow and will NEVER by a ROKU tv again.

I have the same problem on all of my Roku TV's and Roku sticks. I have parental controls in place so this should not be happening at all. This needs to be fixed yesterday because my kids should not be seeing this. Roku, fix this soon or I will be forced to abandon the Roku platform for something that works and cares about kids.

  • All I did was under "settings", I went to "Home Screen" and then "Recommendation rows" and selected "Hide".

    Top picks = gone

We did this as well and it popped back up on all of our rokus in a few hours.

  • I just noticed these same ads last night, and then got questioned about it this morning.  My family wanted to know who was watching these types of shows to make it suggest other similar titles.  So glad to see this is not the case, and everyone commenting here is also getting these pushed to their devices without their consent.   I do not appreciate Roku making a ransom demand that to turn off these ads, I have to opt in to let them access and sell any personal information they can get from my devices.  Unbelievable.  Now I have to inform and explain to my parents that they are going to be seeing these inappropriate ads and how 'fix' the problem.  Will wait for the class action l-a-w-suit on this one.  Everyone take notes.
