In my case, when I got my Roku in 2016, I went into The Roku Channel and saw a commercial within a few minutes. I didn't use that app again. It was an easy fix. There are other ways of course: Use the mute button, flee the room (I think they assume you're doing that anyway), go back to FCC-regulated TV... But for me there are too many apps on Roku to watch any that I don't completely enjoy.
