Feature Request: Profanity Filter

Does anyone know if Roku has plans to offer any profanity filter software apps that can be installed on the device? Is it even up for discussion? My family likes to watch tv and movies but are extremely limited in what we can see because we do not like to hear STREET TALK constantly. We would definitely pay an extra fee to have it.

  • There is no real practical profanity filter devised yet. Trying to use closed captioning is not reliable, especially anything live, and the processing power needed to properly analyze the audio would be quite high and still not reliable.

I would be willing to pay extra so I can view a movie without being hit with numerous f-bombs.

Isn't there someone out there who is up for this? Creating such a filter would be welcomed by many streamers!

There is a Netflix profanity filter for Google. Works great and you can add words to it.  I am not sure why Roku couldn't do the same.

  • Until Roku offers something, your only options are probably Clearplay and Vidangel. For a minimal monthly cost you can filter most movies and some TV shows. Filters work on Amazon, Netflix, Disney Plus and others. Vidangel can purchase from Amazon and cast it to your TV. Works great.

I wanted to add VidAngel and it says that it can't be added to Roku, they blocked it or something. Is this what they call a side add?  I have teens and the language in shows is terrible. If I had a dollar for every F-bomb in a month, I could buy a large boat. No morals. They tell parents to take control, but don't give you the ability.

Thanks for the suggestion! But do I understand that the Enjoy app won't work on ROKU boxes like the Roku 3, or Express+ ?

Looks like it's designed for smart TVs, computers, and smart phones, and not streaming boxes attached to TVs. Is that right?

  • So would we! Vidangel would be greatly appreciated.

  • I agree, there needs to be a filter/censor for profanity and nudity

What is the point of watching Keven Hart, Dave Chappelle and other great comics if every other word is bleeped? It completely disrupts the flow of the routine. And yes, I agree, there are plenty of very funny clean comics and I love them, however, too many Netflix stand up specials are censored. WHAT IS THIS? SOVIET RUSSIA??"??""?

These people aren't asking anything to be censored, or asking for anything that would affect what you see. They are merely asking for a way to filter what goes into their own eyes and ears. Why are you bothered by their request. That is as silly as getting upset with someone in a restaurant who asks not to be seated under a fan because they don't want to be chilly or not near a window because of the glare from outside. It's ok for you to want to not be restricted in what you can watch, and it's ok that they want to not be restricted in what THEY watch.

As has probably been noted before: A "generic" filter would be nearly useless. Closed captioning is not only not always accurate in words, but also not accurate in time. It's even possible the Roku software may not allow a channel to mute audio on it's own.

As a Christian, I refuse to listen to any so called comic or movie that uses my God or Lords name in vain.

I pray to God Roku listens to so many request to install a filter so we can watch tv in peace. I am at the brink of removing all of my Roku devices and installing Firestick.

A language filter is much needed for Roku. There are a lot of interesting series and movies that we have started watching, and then just stop because of the foul, unnecessary language. Especially on Netflix - they seem to think all Americans have potty mouth.

You need to complain to Netflix, not Roku.  Roku doesn't control the programming on any channel other than their own.

I’m asking for a filter app on the Roku device that would block language on all channels. Dish network has TV Guardian that can be installed on their box for a small monthly fee.

  • Disabling the ads on Roku is not going to hurry up your internet speeds except you are on some thing as sluggish as dialup. If you're experiencing gradual speeds as you can read, you ought to contact your ISP and feature them check your net.
