This is something that Roku isn't going to be able to add that'll be compatible across all the apps, this is a function that the individual app developers are going to have to add to their app if the deem it.

They could at minimum add it to there own Roku Media Player APP, I think that is the point most people are making.

I think Roku should do an effort to add variable speed to the Roku Media Player. Roku's community made that demand a long, long time ago, but it has not been addressed. I would like to watch certain action scenes in slow motion. If the Media Player programmer cannot do it, maybe he should consult the programmers of VLC player. Or Roku system should allow the installation of VLC player.

The Roku Media Player (RMP) is basically abandonware. It has not been updated in a long time. If anything,it sounds like it is less useable than it used to be.
There are no 3rd party players, and that may be due to security as it would typically mean accessing USB or a local network. Even RMP had a scary message requiring you to give it access awhile ago.

The Roku Media Player has not been updated in a very long time. It has several known bugs and has basically been abandoned by Roku. There are no 3rd party media players.
