I like VLC  as well. I've used it for many many years. It is open source and has more bells and whistles than I'll ever need,

You need to take this to the VLC Developers directly.

I'd like to see VLC on roku too, but meanwhile I'd recommend using Plex for playing media over your LAN since it will transcode formats as necessary for different devices, or using Handbrake on a computer to convert to compatible formats.

yeah I stopped using the media player on Roku a long time ago for just those reasons. And I removed that app.

Now I play stuff on VLC on one of my computers and just mirror it over to the bigger tv.

  • I just bought my Roku TV and its a great product.

But what i don't get is how you have compatibility between the roku stick and vlc

But between vlc and the roku tv nothing yet

Please add it, it would be a great combination.

Try using the PLAYON application and the free version of the PLAYON server on your laptop.  It will work with Roku to watch movies in MKV or MP4.  A an alternative to waiting on VLC, or waiting on the MEDIA PLAYER app to be upgraded to work with SMB shared NAS files.

  • Definitely need VLC Player for Roku.  The build-in Roku media player doesn't play mkv or a number of other video formats which my 5-year-old Xiaomi TV box plays almost everything I throw at it.  I have to use my Xiaomi box to play most of my saved video now instead of my Roku Ultra, which is a shame.

I have been using the roku media player for years and it doesn't work at all video playback is not supported on all file formats and when you do pause or go back it doesn't work at all this media player is a joke vs a VLC Player that have way more fractures that this player we called Roku Media Player that can not do anything after the update to  the media player that did not help at all. If we just had VLC we have way more better support for a lot of file formats like. This is crazy that we cant not even have a good player we have to force to use this players that doesn't have any fire formats support or work right

      come on guys Roku

If you can play over the network instead of from USB, try using Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin.
